The Pogo Mine Nurse Practitioner provides medical treatment for Pogo Mine employees, contractors, and visitors, and arranges for ill or seriously injured employees to be transported off site to an appropriate medical facility. The Nurse Practitioner advises employees concerning health and safety concerns. The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for administering the occupational medicine surveillance programs such as drug and alcohol testing, employment physicals, and lead, cadmium, respiratory and hearing tests. He/She is also responsible for the associated duties such as ordering the proper lab tests, obtaining the labs, interpreting the results and maintaining records in an appropriate fashion. The Nurse Practitioner may inspect and advise on site facilities and working conditions related to employee health issues. The Nurse Practitioner will participate as assigned to support the Pogo Mine Emergency Response Teams and to promote the development of trained emergency responders at the Mine. The Nurse Practitioner will be responsible for developing materials and instructing the safety & health portion of MSHA annual refresher training.

Pogo Mine is located 88 miles south of Fairbanks, Alaska.


Promote and ensure a safe work environment and safety conscious work force by supporting and following safety initiatives, procedures, and activities. Operate a Medical treatment facility to ensure that injured or sick employees are provided with proper care. Provide routine medical treatment during clinic hours; on call 24 hours per day for emergencies. Assist in the development of the Pogo Mine Wellness program and lead the implementation, administration and monitoring of the program. Assess patient health by interviewing patients; performing physical examinations; obtaining, updating, and studying medical histories. Determine abnormal conditions by administering or ordering diagnostic tests, such as x-rays, electrocardiograms, and laboratory studies; interpreting test results. Document patient care services by charting in patient and department records. Perform therapeutic procedures by administering injections and immunizations; suturing; managing wounds and infections. Instruct and counsel patients by describing therapeutic regimens; giving normal growth and development information; promoting wellness and health maintenance. Provide continuity of care by developing and implementing patient management plans. Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations. Protect patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols. Keep accurate records of all surveillance data, clinical visits, services, accidents, or illnesses. Responsible for collecting and sending out samples for the purpose of drug and alcohol testing. Maintain records and chain of custody in accordance with the laws.     Establish and maintain an appropriate level of medical supplies. Conduct the first-aid and health portion (blood lead, cadmium, and hearing conservation) of MSHA annual refresher training. Responsible for providing support and training for the MERT. Assist with Workers' Compensation correspondence and claims handling. Perform other related duties as assigned.



Masters Degree in Nursing. Certification as an Acute Care or Family Nurse Practitioner by an approved National certifying body. State of Alaska Advance Practice Nursing License. Drug Enforcement Administration (IDEA) Certification.


Current RN and APN license valid and in good standing and unrestricted in state of Alaska. Current and valid DEA number.  Current Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support is required. Valid Driver's license is required. 


Required: Five or more years of experience providing emergency medical care as a Nurse Practitioner  in a high volume acute care setting, preferably an Emergency Department.

Preferred: Two or more years of experience in a critical care setting. Two or more years working in a remote industrial setting.     Experience conducting Respiratory Fit Tests. Experience conducting audiometry testing. Experience delegating work to lower level EMS personnel in an emergency care setting.


Position must be able to work independently with little direct supervision.     This position should possess exceptional clinical judgment as necessary to make critical patient care decisions regarding medical care and transport under the conditions of remote location, extreme weather conditions and extended transport times, while balancing the medical coverage needs of the mine site with the needs of the patient. Effective written, verbal, and communication skills are needed to satisfy the effective delivery of the training and safety messages/policies of the company. Demonstrated computer skills in Windows environment with experience in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Should have critical thinking skills and problem solving skills. Strong planning and organizational skills. Excellent oral and written communication, editing, organization and interpersonal skills are a must. Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint is required. 


Ability to provide leadership and mentorship to EMS Team members. Ability to work in a team environment and adapt to changing conditions. Proven ability to read, comprehend, and apply information from technical manuals and other reference materials. Ability to work in a team with a high regard for quality and environmental concerns, along with a strong commitment to Safety and Safe Production. Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision. Ability to assume increasing levels of responsibility. Must be able to work independently and as member of a proactive, consciously customer service-oriented team. Must be able to operate in a strict climate of confidentiality and discretion.

KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of MSHA Yellow Jacket standards and regulations. Operational knowledge of all referenced equipment in this description, office equipment and machines (i.e. PC, phone, fax, copier.)

Accommodations: Requires staying at the company provided camp during the work rotation.  Camp facilities provide dining service, game room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and dorm room having phone, internet & cable tv.

Transportation:  The company provides bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction or Tok.
