Pogo Mine is seeking candidates for our Geology Manager.

This is a camp based position working Monday through Thursday. Please provide a cover leter and resume, along with your electronic application.  Review of applications will begin March 13, 2018. Reporting to the Assistant GM and the General Manager, the Geology Manager leads a team of geologists, technicians plus contractors, in the drilling, logging, delineation, modeling, and evaluation of gold resources at the Pogo mine. Focusing on expansion of underground reserves/resources, the position is also responsible for discovery of satellite deposits on the 87 square mile Pogo claim block in order to increase the life-of-mine.


  • Ensure that the geology department provides timely, accurate geological data to the mine and engineering departments that will guarantee optimal resource recovery.
  • Ensure a high level of data quality, security and QA/QC.
  • Develop, with staff, the annual exploration drilling program and file the Plan of Operation
  • Develop exploration targets outside of mine area but within economic hauling distance to the mill.
  • Create the annual geology department budget and provide ongoing cost management.
  • Perform due diligence review of the annual Reserve/Resource report.
  • Author the annual Exploration Resource report; interact with other departments and other SMM offices to provide clear communication of risk and/or opportunities shown in the annual report.
  • Responsible for meeting environmental standards for exploration work and receive all necessary permits and approvals before commencing work.
  • Manage the land title security, and any assessment work reporting and payment commitments on the 87 sq miles of the Pogo mine lease and claim block.
  • Ensure the safe operation of the department and compliance with MSHA safety standards.
  • Negotiate drilling and other contracts for the benefit of the company
  • Act as the Chief Geologist in that person's absence


Mentor and manage the performance of the entire geology staff (25+).

Oversee the management of support contractors (48+).

Monitor and optimize the geology team workflow to ensure timely data delivery to end users.

Show strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop positive working relationships across all mine departments.

Make important daily and timely decisions on changes to the geologic model that could affect production.

Lead by example in regard to following safety guidelines and use of PPE.

Oversee department-hiring process to obtain the best selection of seasonal and permanent candidates.

Coordinate training of new hires and suggest off-site technical courses for seasoned professionals.

Coordinate seasonal housing for temporary staff to assure optimum work environment.

Strive for excellence in all aspects of the department through bi-annual employee reviews.


Previous success in adding value to a company through technical and economic assessment of exploration and development targets at a mine site and near mine environments.

Successful background in leading diverse teams in the development of gold resources.

Proven leadership and communication skills.

Underground production experience with the ability to make daily decisions on stope headings, design and optimization.


M.S. degree in geology (economic geology preferred). PhD a plus.


Registered and licensed professional geologist or a certified professional geologist (CPG).

Must be Qualified Person (QP) under CNI 43-101 standards.

Valid driver's license required. MSHA certificate required. 


A minimum of 15 to 20 years' experience in hard rock metal mining with a combination of production, development and exploration experience is required.

Ten years' experience in gold mining is required. (underground vein mining preferred)

Underground production experience is required.

At least five years in a management-leadership role.


Strong interpersonal skills that lead to solid working relationships across all departments. Critical thinking skills and problem solving abilities essential. Strong planning and organizational skills. Effective written, verbal, and communication skills at the top management level and to be able to also communicate effectively to various Sumitomo Metal Mining offices. Demonstrated computer skills in MS Office especially Excel in relationship to budget preparation, departmental organization and work flow. Able to effectively use mine evaluation software packages especially GEMCOM, Vulcan and ArcGIS. 


Able to work efficiently in the face of extreme deadlines. Able to work in a dynamic team environment and adapt to constantly changing priorities on a daily basis. Ability to work within an interdepartmental environment and mitigate conflict and improve working relationships.


An understanding of a wide variety of precious metals deposits styles.

Familiarity with high-grade, vein hosted gold deposits.

Have a realistic approach to defining economic targets on time and within budget.

Extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise from low to high decibels, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light. This is a remote site- based position with permanent camp and facilities. Individual must spend 4 days/week Monday through Thursday at the remote camp site
