General Accountability
Reporting to the Exploration Superintendent, the Senior Exploration Geologist is a Level 3-5 mid-career/senior geologist with sufficient surface exploration experience to direct the daily operations of the surface and underground drilling program. This person will perform daily field safety visits to the field contractors during the exploration season. This position is critical to defining drilling targets for new resources to extend life of mine.

Nature and Scope of Position
The Sr. Exploration Geologist's primary focus is the daily supervision and optimization of the surface exploration program. This work must be performed in an exacting manner to ensure daily drilling operations are completed safely and in timely fashion.

The Sr. Exploration Geologist manages the drilling contractor and related labor. The contractor's supplies, drilling stations, and instructions are all managed by the incumbent, according to the drilling contract.  The Sr. Geologist confirms adherence to contracts and the contractor reports incidents and injuries to this geologist. The incumbent regularly inspects the drilling stations to ensure compliance with mine site policies and MSHA regulations.

The Sr. Exploration Geologist also aids in the design of surface and underground exploration drill holes to intercept targets, and ensure that existing stopes are not penetrated. In conjunction with the Exploration Superintendent and SMM Pogo geologists, the geologist contributes to the modelling of the newly discovered resource polygons.

The Sr. Exploration Geologist is responsible for the documentation of disturbance and reclamation associated with SMM Pogo's exploration permit.  This involves using a Leica RTK GPS for the data collection of built roads, disturbed helicopter sites and drill collar locations.  Data collected is then digitized in ArcGIS to provide disturbance area calculations and associated maps. The Sr. Exploration Geologist will assist the Exploration Superintendent in the completion of the annual Plan of Operations, Reclamation/Disturbance and Work Assessment reports for submission to the State of Alaska DNR.

The Sr. Exploration Geologist will provide input for the yearly planning of exploration programs, to include new ideas and/or concepts that could lead to new discoveries on the SMM Pogo Property.

Specific Accountabilities
1. Design and maintain a surface and underground drilling operation which produces projected drilling footages and intercepts at budgeted costs.
2. Keep detailed records of drilling costs to ensure adherence to contract and budget.
3. Ensure that drillholes are drilled optimally, sampled and logged correctly, and that the data is exactly entered into the project database.
4. Evaluate drilling results on a daily basis in order to alter drilling plans and provide intercepts and geologic information.
5. Prepare yearly and monthly exploration reports.
6. Must follow all safety and environmental standards and procedures.

Equipment Used
Leica RTK GPS, Computer station with MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint), pickup truck, Brunton Compass, Laser Disto, mine modeling software (Vulcan and GEMS), ArcGIS and Global Mapper software.
